A Naperville attorney is facing criminal charges on suspicion he stole and mishandled hundreds of thousands of dollars from his clients and former law partners.
Prosecutors charged Steven D. Gustafson with theft up to $500,000, forgery, financial institution fraud and financial crimes enterprise.
The 44-year-old Naperville man became licensed to practice law in Illinois Nov. 7, 1991. His focus is estate planning and trusts.
The allegations began while he was a shareholder in the now-defunct law firm of James, Gustafson & Thompson. The firm was dissolved Feb. 21, 2006, and all but one of Gustafson's former partners have sued him.

When a person in the position of holding the public's trust steals, the punishment should be very stiff.
I hope Gustafson goes to prison for a very long time.
In addition, I hope he loses everything he has and comes out of his cage homesless.
His focus in his law interest tell me why: lead to the money via estates and guardianship.
I wonder if Steven D. Gustafson acted as a fiduciary, a court appointed a guardian (for profit) of a ward of the state?
If so, you can be certain the ward's assets were drained to $00.00.
Lock him up!
He probably fed his greed while doing estate planning and trusts and then branched out.
And the justice system wonders why the public has no basic respect for it???
Gustafson is a prime example of why.
The word "trust" is a source of late night comedy jokes.
The word "trust" has no meaning anymore; the word "trust" will be eliminated from our vocabulary.
