Mother Held Prisoner by Court-Appointed Guardian

There are many things we are deeply fearful of. The death of a child is one. Being imprisoned for something we’re not guilty of is another. Losing any loved one that you can’t imagine living without is another. Unless you’ve experienced such wretched circumstances, it’s hard to imagine what it might feel like.

Growing old and not being able to care for yourself is another common fear. Large families may wonder how anyone could die alone, unprotected and uncared for. In the USA, unless you have the means to take care of yourself, you’re subjected to laws and an underground of political corruption that literally and unbelievably forces senior citizens to die. Here is just one true story.

Maggie Was a Loving Mother and Grandmother
Maggie Grover is an American 76 year old nursing home patient who is fed baby food and is usually dehydrated. Everything she owns and loved has been taken away. She was assigned a bed and some pills.

Maggie is well enough to try and fight for her right to life. She is worried at the burden this [guardianship] has created for her children. At each attempt to rescue their mother, the Guardian, in retaliation, has threatened to ban the family from visiting their mother in the nursing home, move Maggie out of state or put her into an even less desirable nursing home. In other words, the Guardian is emotionally black mailing the family.

{U}nless a situation such as Maggie’s story happens in your family, you’ll likely believe it doesn’t happen or can’t happen where you live. Research “Guardian Abuse”, “Grannynapping” (kidnapping or when families try to rescue someone), Medicaid fraud, (Maggie’s Guardian has 3 houses and several kids in college. Remember, he takes all his “Ward’s” monies) and exploitation of the elderly.

As I started to read this, I thought someone wrote my story!! My 77 yr old mother with mild dementia traveled from her home in PA to FL to accompanied by one of her children, never to be returned. The state of Florida got involved, appointed a "Professional Guardian" who I believe is nothing more than a professional thief! I have fought almost 3 yrs to get my mother home from the "Sunshine State". The court appointed, "Professional Guardian" uses mother assets to fight me to keep her locked up and isolated while lying and defrauding the Florida Court. The Circuit Judge then gets out his "rubber stamp" for everything this "Professional Guardian asks for. Having made 10 trips to Florida in 11 months, I am aware of the neglect and abuse mother has been subjected to. Mother was very vocal about not wanting to stay there and wanting to come home. Of course if you are use to walking a mile a day like mother was, who would want to be locked up and isolated just because she can't recall what she had for breakfast??? I can only assume that is why the court appointed professional guardian requested medication... permitted my mother to be given Zyprexa, a drug not approved by FDA and specifically noted as dangerous to the elderly with dementia. No one is safe!!!

I appreciate the reporter's style of writing this story. It really brings the nightmare home.

I was particularly taken by "the guardian is emotionally black mailing the family". This is so true, as I have found out the hard way. Also the fact that the guardians uses the funds of the mother to fight the children who want only the best for their precious relative, is a most unjust circumstance. Everything stated here is the same in my case. Florida is one of the worse places in America for this kind of treatment. If you value your freedom, don't move here.

"Prisoner" is the exact right term. Guardianship should work in the best interest of the ward. In other words, the guardian should serve his/her wards and be accountable to them.

Instead, bad guardians (not all guardians) weild their power against their helpless wards and their wards' families.
