DELHI, Calif. (FOX26) — Merced County sheriff’s deputies arrested a man Sunday night after they say he assaulted an elderly man with a baseball bat.

Deputies were called to the 12000 block of Rose Lawn Avenue in Delhi for a domestic disturbance.

The caller said Matthew Brian Costa of Turlock was assaulting an elderly man at the residence.

When Deputies arrived, they located Costa intoxicated and lying in the yard.

Deputies learned that Costa arrived at the house drunk and got into an argument with the elderly man before assaulting him with a bat.

Costa was arrested and placed in the back of a patrol car, kicking the door so hard that it caused damage to the vehicle.

Costa was arrested for elder abuse and vandalism to the patrol car and booked into the Merced County Jail.
