With Gov. Pat Quinn threatening to cut millions from agencies and services across Illinois, area seniors are worried that at-home care will be slashed beyond repair.
About 100 seniors gathered at the Thompson Center this morning to protest the cuts, which would slice the Community Care program by half, eliminating home care service for about 25,000 seniors. Standing in front of a mock “Wheel of Fortune” wheel, members of the Jane Addams Senior Caucus railed against Quinn’s plan, and poked fun at Illinois House Speaker Rep. Michael Madigan.
Mimi Harris, 77, of Edgewater: “The cuts are going to be really bad for seniors. I understand we’re in a financial crisis, but this is not the time.”
The protesters are worried that many seniors would lose their caregivers and be forced to move into nursing homes.

Go Illinois Seniors! Keep shouting out loud!
ReplyDeleteAt home care has many benefits for the individual, their family and the Illinois budget.
Everything about Pat Quinn has changed dramatically since he became Governor Pat Quinn.
I had bad feelings about Quinn not taking an independent position, my feelings are correct.
Illinois House Speaker Rep. Michael Madigan is a real piece of work. He has been around in his powerful position far to long.
The seniors are the last group that should suffer due to Illinois' money problems; they have been around decades; they deserve services.
Many are getting Illinois funding who are not deserving, but they are a big voting constituency, bank rollers for their campaign war chests and that is a guarantee that those who were voted into office by these beholding people and groups who want MORE....MORE....MORE of my money.
There are more unproductive people taking than putting in to the system. It is time for them to pay their dues.
Do the math figure it out, programs for those undeserving individuals and groups must be TERMINDATED!
Hooray for these courageous Seniors!
ReplyDeleteYes, the first thing they do is cut funding to those who need it.
It is less costly to keep people at home. And safer.
ReplyDeleteOf course the nursing home industry would lose out and they can't have that. And fortunately for them, they've got a big lobbying effort, so they usually get their way. Unfortunately for us.
Go get them Seniors!
