Bob Queener - 'Slowly Tossed Away'

As if 79-year-old Bob Queener hasn't been through enough in the past 16 months, now his nursing home is giving him the boot.

The trouble began in December 2009 when the state yanked him out of his tidy, mortgage-free home on Des Moines' east side, supposedly because he could no longer take care of himself and his family wasn't moving fast enough to find round-the-clock care.

Queener suffers from mild dementia and mild autism. He doesn't reason or remember the way he used to, and sometimes he gets agitated.

But he's conversational and alert enough to wonder where all his money went. Before the Department of Human Services came after him, he had about $160,000 in the bank.

Now there's a few hundred in a checking account, and he has until May 16 to find another place to live. Last week, the people who take care of Queener at Trinity Center at Luther Park gave notice: He owed $6,450, with another $6,655 due at the end of the month.

  1. The goons can now qualify him for Medicaid. What are they waiting for - criminal investigation?

When will the taxpayers wake up?

  2. The State did this to him, now they are responsible for making sure he has a place to live.

In IA does the Insurance law state it is mandatory to pay for homehealthcare if needed .......if Mr. Queener had gap insurance than the State should repay him for the items they threw away and give him his money back and let him move home ..........

  3. you're right, anonymous, the state did it; the state should own up to it and fix it completely.

  4. I want to cry for what's happening to Bob Queener. At the same time, I have great hope that legislators like Senator Black will champion the cause against guarianship abuse because of what's happening to Bob Queener.

  7. I believe we probably wouldn't have know what happened to Mr. Queener had Senator Black not been involved. That's what made it news. I commend Senator Black for his rescue and I know he hates what's happening now as much as Mr. Queener does and the rest of us who have suffered in guardianship and know how it feels.

  8. I wish I could do more than pray for Mr. Queener. I hope praying is enough.

  9. Alright, let's look at this logically - the trouble began in 2009 when supposedly (and I question it) the family didn't provide for 24 hour care soon enough, so the state got involved and then proceeded to do the usual - ruin this innocent man's life in the name of justice.

It's now 2011 - has the state in two years found in home 24 hour care for Mr. Queener? In two years?

It's time for the state to put Bob Queener's interests before the state's.

  10. Tossed away sure sums it up. When people no longer contribute monetarily to society, they're cast aside or thrown away. How very sad and heartbreaking.

Thank goodness for the work being done in Iowa to jumpstart reform. A special thanks to NASGA members Jay Driesen and Jennifer Hunter-Berg for their teamwork and for the legislators who are listening to them.

  11. This is a poster case of elder abuse/guardianship abuse.

As Anon 1 said, "the state did this to him, now they are responsible for...."

    Exactly right.
