Georgia Suspects Sentenced for Elder Cruelty and Exploitation

A Chatham County Superior Court Judge has sentenced a Garden City woman and man for cruelty and exploitation of the woman's 68-year-old mother.

Mary Daphne Wiggins, 48, and Michael Victor Nesmith, 52, deprived Wiggins' mother, Caroline Louise Thomas, of access to food and water and withheld her medications between June 1 and June 26, 2012, according to ADA and Elder Abuse Prosecutor Shalena Cook Jones.

During that time Wiggins and Nesmith are also accused of removing the window air conditioning window-unit and boarding up the windows to the room where Thomas spent most of her time. In addition, they routinely spent Thomas' Social Security Checks, said Jones.

Garden City Police were alerted to the situation after EMS was called to the Dean Forest Road home to provide medical assistance to Thomas and she detailed her abuse.

Wednesday Wiggins was sentenced to 20 years with 6 to serve for cruelty to a person 65 years of age or older, with an additional 5 years to serve concurrently for exploitation of an elderly person.

Nesmith was sentenced to 20 years with 8 to serve for cruelty to a person 65 years of age or older, with an additional 5 years to serve concurrently for exploitation of an elderly person.

  1. If more jail time were made available for people who abuse elders - and made known by the media - maybe they would think twice before doing it.

  2. It makes me sick to my stomach that people can do this type of thing with no remorse - other than the remorse of getting caught.

  3. Nasty people who deserve and earned the full force of the court's punishment let the prison population do some pay back on this - I would give them life in prison.

Extra punishment: Many prisoners do not look kindly on other prisoners who are cowards whose victims are the young, helpless adults and old folks.

However in truth what happened to the victim Caroline Louise Thomas isn't shocking to me why? I've heard the details case after case after case.

Cold hard facts: The abusive defendants here are copy cats reading guardianship cases with legs into wrongful placement into Hospice to eliminate the problem is premeditated homicide under color of law.

Death by over drugging, psychotropic meds, starvation and dehydration hospice patient is deprived of nourishment with one result with intent: death.

Wards are isolated in windowless rooms in nursing homes deprived of TV, deprived of having access to personal telephone, limited to 2 phone calls from family per week via speaker phone so staff can listen - and so much more.

There are cases that prove the above and so much more.
