Bridgeport man sentenced to 6-60 years for six fraud-related convictions

CLARKSBURG — David Eugene Adkins, 62, of Bridgeport, was sentenced Thursday to 6-60 years in prison for four counts of fraudulent schemes and two counts of financial exploitation of the elderly.

Harrison County Chief Judge James A. Matish undoubtedly took into consideration that Adkins had been sentenced to prison three times previously for fraud-related crimes.

Adkins was sentenced to prison in 1991 for two separate counts of false pretenses. He had more time added for another false pretenses count in early 1992.

Then in late 2012, Adkins was sentenced to incarceration for felony fraudulent schemes and misdemeanor false swearing. On the former, he opened a bank account with $75 and wrote checks totaling $7,000; on the latter, he pleaded guilty to testifying in a 2007 trial that he had a contractor’s license at a time when he did not.

Adkins’ victims in the latest crimes were the elderly, the infirm and a church.

The cases were investigated by Harrison Sheriff’s Deputies Brian Deem and Steve Secreto, Lumberport Police Chief Greg Scolapio, Bridgeport Police Lt. Detective Gary Weaver and Zach Kesling of Stonewood police.
