Incapacitated AZ Patient Who Gave Birth had Been Pregnant Before

Five months after it shocked the country and grabbed headlines, the story of the incapacitated Arizona woman who unexpectedly gave birth in a long-term care facility is back with another twist: A doctor has determined the woman had been pregnant before.

A report from the Maricopa County Medical Center reveals the 29-year-old woman not only had gone through a previous pregnancy, but also she’d been “violated repeatedly” during her years at Hacienda HealthCare. The report is part of a $45 million notice of claim her family’s lawyer filed on Wednesday against the state and the facility.

The unidentified woman’s story first surfaced in December, when she gave birth to a boy in the long-term facility, where she had been in a coma-like state for several years. DNA tests linked the sexual assault to caregiver Nathan Sutherland, who’s been charged with sexual assault and vulnerable adult abuse. He’s pleaded not guilty.
