Tyler nurse convicted, sentenced to 6 years for Exploitation of an Elderly Person

TYLER, Texas (KLTV) - A Tyler nurse has been found guilty of exploiting an elderly person, and will spend six years in prison as a result.

On Tuesday, a jury found Karen Elaine Madrid guilty of the charge of Exploitation of an Elderly person. The evidence at the trial showed that Madrid, who is a nurse, met the victim of her crime at a local hospital, and later became his caretaker. The victim, who suffers from dementia, was found by neighbors to have no food in his house, and a missing vehicle.

Adult Protective Services and the Smith County Sheriff’s Office opened an investigation after neighbors reported this. Bank records revealed that Madrid had charged over $25,000 of expenses to the victim, including a vacation for herself and her boyfriend to New York City, according to the Smith County District Attorney’s Office.

  1. My mother went through something a lot like this, unfortunately the court appointed guardian has even stolen precious items from the adult children that were there and locked out of the house. This woman treatment of my mother, father and one of the three adult children was treated worse than mud under her shoes, no compassion what so ever, there has been so many attempts to have her removed, sadly no. My father died not seeing his children for 2 years before his passing and if my mother gets a visitor from a relationship she is moved to a different nursing home further away than the last she has been in 3 so far and with every move her mind goes a lot worse. I live in Missouri and I am trying to fight this, but I have run out of places to help.
