Birmingham police officer arrested on elderly exploitation charge

The Birmingham Police Department announced Wednesday one of its officers has been arrested on an elderly exploitation charge.

Sgt. Rodarius Mauldin says Officer Gregory Irvin was arrested Wednesday following an investigation with the Department of Human Resources.

Mauldin says Irvin was immediately relieved of his duties as a patrol officer after DHR alerted the department on October 22 of a case filed a few days earlier involving Irvin.

Irvin is charged with financial exploitation of the elderly in the first degree, which means he allegedly took property worth over $2500 from an elderly person. Mauldin says preliminary investigation shows the victim is a related to Irvin.

He is in the Jefferson County Jail on $30,000 bond.

Irvin had been a Birmingham police officer since April 2017. He was assigned to the Patrol Division prior to the criminal and internal investigation.
