The Senate Aging Committee examined the state of the assisted living
industry. One of the witnesses was Patricia Vessenmeyer, whose late
husband lived in an assisted living facility due to dementia. She
described the poor conditions in the residence and the exorbitant costs
she paid for it. Assisted living facilities are primarily regulated by
states, unlike nursing homes, which are regulated by both federal and
state agencies.
