SEAL BEACH, CA — A 48-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after she tried to murder an elderly family member, the Seal Beach Police Department reported.
Seal Beach resident Dawn Igna was arrested after an hour-long police stand-off, authorities said. She faces charges including attempted murder, elder abuse and criminal threats.
The incident was initially reported at around 1 p.m. Thursday after police received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in a home located in the 100 block of 5th Street.
Officers made contact with the elderly man who had made the report outside of the home. According to the victim, he was involved in an argument with an adult family member inside of the house.
During the argument, the victim told Seal Beach police officers that the woman used a knife to attempt to stab him while threatening to kill him. He was able to leave the house unharmed, authorities said.
After officers arrived, Igna reportedly barricaded herself in a bedroom of the home and refused to surrender to officers. Officers then tried to negotiate with her for an hour, though she continued to refuse to surrender, authorities said.
Ultimately, officers entered the bedroom and took Igna into custody. She was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries related to the use of pepper spray, officers said.
No other injuries were reported and no further information was available.
