OTTUMWA – An Ottumwa man has been arrested and charged with the financial exploitation of a dependent person over the course of several years.
According to court documents, 65-year-old Duane Carl Jones
maintained control over the victim’s checking account from September
2021 through February 2023. A criminal complaint states that Jones
utilized the victim’s funds for personal purchases and ATM withdrawals
amounting to thousands of dollars.
Jones, according to the report, admitted that none of his own
money had been deposited into the account and that only he and the
victim had access to the account.
A warrant for Jones’ arrest was issued in September and he was taken into custody Thursday in Ottumwa.
Jones is charged with dependent adult abuse – financial exploitation, a Class D Felony.
He currently remains in the Wapello County Jail on a $5,000 bond and has waived his preliminary court hearing.
