Gary Harvey suffered a traumatic brain injury after a heart attack and subsequent fall down a flight of stairs.
His wife, Sara, has fought for over three years to free him from Chemung County Dept. of Social Services, his court-appointed guardian, which has confined Gary to a nursing home. Sara feels he is neglected and abused, and wants to bring her husband home so that she can care for him.
The guardian has deprived Sara of critical information and shut her out of the decision-making process regarding her husband’s care and restricted her to limited, timed, and “supervised” visits.
Now, the County plans to seek a court order to withhold Gary’s nutrition and water and put him on DNR status.
Gary Harvey is a Veteran. “Supporting the troops” should mean to support them when they need us; not just when we need them. Gary Harvey needs us now.
Please call Chemung County Attorney Bryan Maggs at 607-733-4635 and express your support for Sara Harvey to make life-and-death decisions for her husband – instead of the County or court. Tell Bryan Maggs to surrender the guardianship and let Gary Harvey go home.

There is a dangerous trend to simply throw people away as if they don't matter -- and to rationalize it by saying the person "wouldn't want to live that way".
I believe most people, if given the choice, would choose life.
Thank you for diligence in tracking this important story.
We must all pay attention here. What is happening to Gary Harvey could happen to any one of us.
It is outrageous!
Send Gary Harvey HOME, Chemung County!
Gary Harvey has been denied the comfort and security provided by his wife. He exists in a nursing home instead of his home.
It is not fair to him that he was denied the opportunity to be cared for at home - familiar surroundings and constant interaction.
Send him home, Judge!
He was injured three years ago and now they want to kill him?
Why now?
Oh wait, I bet they've gone through his money. I bet he's actually costing them money now -- and they can't have that!
What happened to common sense?
I am sick and tired of innocent and helpless people being imprisoned in a nursing home when they could be taken care of at home -- where any one of us would want to be.
ENOUGH!!!!!!
Denying Gary Harvey's wife information on his condition and shutting her out is cruel and inhumane.
How would these sob's like it if the same thing were done to them?
Chemung County is torturing a defenseless man!
How do these people sleep at night?
This is our future unless people protest for these cases!
Power and control addiction
This is what happens to all when strangers take over your loved one. The county has abused this man with their incompassionate power. No regards for his life at the hearing...non chalant like they do this every day. No wonder Judge O'shea was so harsh and critical with the county. Maggs did not even show up in the court room the coward!
I will have to agree about Gary becoming an expense and not a profit. I guess county executive Santuli meant what he said in the Star Gazette he was going to reduce medicaid. Yep this is how.
Watch nout seniors you are next.
