Roughly 120 assisted living advocates convened in Washington D.C. Tuesday as part of the Assisted Living Federation of America's annual federal "fly-in" day.
The initiative is part of ALFA's continuing effort to educate policy makers on the importance of assisted living as a long-term care option, and the differences between assisted and skilled nursing care. Advocates held more than 470 meetings with senators, congressmen and staffers, according to a statement from ALFA. The number of participants in this year's event was twice that of last year, organizers said.

My mom was in a ALF that appeared to be understaffed. This ALF facility was taking residents who clearly needed more assistance. I found it very troublesome that on several occassions there were different residents in the apt. next to hers that "screamed" for hours on end. In my mind an ALF should allow people some assistance w/o being upset on a regular basis due to this type of situtation.
I think many people who are in nursing facilities could be in assisted living instead.
Yes, Anon 1, you're right. Many assisted living facilities take people who don't belong there and then don't tend to them properly.
The recent expose in the Seattle Times (posted here) was very telling.
Assisted living is better than being in a nursing home. But home is better than that. We have to work for ways to keep people at home!
True, some my be better off in assisetd living, but not all are. My adult incomptent son since birth (Down's syndrome) is being held prisioner in an assisted living home. He was given a new guardian, and has someone over his estate. He no longer gets to cash and spend his SSI checks nor his checks from working. His place of employment so graciously hooked him up with a life insurance policy shortly before he was kidnapped from me. The court has appointed someone over his estate, and if he should pass away today my son would not benefit from the life insurance. My son has been told things that lead him to believe I love him much less than I truley do. It breaks my heart. Please pray for him. He was much better off at home.
