Ponzi schemer Scott Rothstein gets 50-year sentence

FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Scott Rothstein, the South Florida Ponzi schemer extraordinaire, received a 50-year prison sentence Wednesday after a hearing in federal court in Fort Lauderdale.

U.S. District Judge James Cohn, an Alabama native appointed by President George W. Bush, gave the disbarred lawyer more than what prosecutors requested for his crime as the mastermind of South Florida's biggest financial fraud.

"I am truly and deeply sorry for what I have done," Rothstein said, addressing the court wearing cuffs on his wrists and ankles. "I don't expect your forgiveness."

I realize 50 years amounts to life (if he serves it) but it should have been life in prison.

A George Bush appointee? Let's give credit where credit is due, a good judge who believes in law and order. This judge, Judge Cohn gave the guilty one more time than the prosecutors asked for applause and standing ovation Judge Cohn for a handing down a sentence earned and deserved by the perp.

Anon there are limits in sentencing guidelines if the judge had given a 'life sentence' with no chance of parole, that might have given the convicted felon an opening for an appeal and we don't want to open that door, do we?

Best to get this perp in his federal cage asap. I hope he is miserable til his last hour on earth.
