Chief Justice Michael Heavican said the changes made in a 2011 law are providing more protection for vulnerable adults in Nebraska.
The law was passed in response to problems uncovered by The World-Herald.
Heavican touched on the guardianship changes in his annual State of the Judiciary speech to the Nebraska Legislature.

I am happy to see a state actually providing more oversight. It has been a long time coming!
Good news!
I hope they're looking at more than family as guardians here.
Yes, thety're looking at the guardians.
This is wonderful....The Evil shell is starting to crack!!
Well isn't this a pleasant surprise and a great way to end the week. The problems are finally being acknowledged and addressed - celebration that is a big hurdle one wall of protection at a time is coming down. 20% of the population will be over 65. 71 million people do the math that's a lot of guardianship / conservatorship cases and each ward pays a parade of people billing and when the money is drained well it's MEDICAID and in many cases when the money is gone, the ward is a liability now, so the ward is eliminated via hospice, drugging, forced starvation and dehydration knowing doing this will kill the hospice patient and that in my opinion is a homicide. Beware and be aware, we're next.
