How a new Tennessee law aims to reduce elder abuse

A new Tennessee law aims to reduce abuse among vulnerable populations.

It requires a search of the Department of Health's abuse registry and sex offender registry for anyone seeking to become a conservator.

A conservator is a court recognized person allowed to make decisions on behalf of someone else.

It usually applies to the elderly or people with intellectual disabilities.

Chattanooga's Orange Grove helps support adults with special needs in independent housing.

Director of Development Heidi Hoffecker says, "Because the population that orange grove serves is vulnerable, this is an added layer of protection for that population. So of course, we're happy with anything that helps us further protect the people that we support."

Orange Grove leaders say local checks like this already happen, but more protections are always a good thing.
