Tristan Thompson files for conservatorship over 19-year-old brother Amari

Tristan Thompson has filed for conservatorship over his younger brother, Amari.

The NBA athlete, 35, filed to serve as Amari’s limited conservator on Monday, according to documents obtained by Page Six.

Per the docs, Amari, 19, is “unable to properly provide for his personal needs for physical health, food, clothing or shelter,” and “suffers from an intellectual disability and developmental delay.”

The docs also note Amari is “unable to manage his financial resources or to resist fraud or undue influence.”

Amari, the docs state, is unable to comment on the selection of a conservator “due to his developmental delay and intellectual disability.”

Amari has LGS (Lennox-Gastaut syndrome), a severe form of childhood epilepsy that causes multiple types of seizures that can lead to permanent brain damage, resulting in learning difficulties and other disabilities, according to the Cleveland Clinic.

In February 2024, Tristan became Amari’s legal guardian following the death of their mother, Andrea. At the time, Amari was 17 years old.

Tristan claimed that their father, Trevor, had played no role in raising Amari since 2014, according to docs obtained by Page Six.

The judge ruled at the time that a reunion between Amari and Trevor was “not viable due to neglect, abandonment under California law.”

Amari appeared on “Keeping Up With the Kardashians” when Tristan’s ex Khloé Kardashian became his primary caretaker in July 2025.

“He is severely disabled. … He can’t walk or talk,” she said on her “Khloé in Wonder Land” podcast.

Khloé explained that due to Tristan’s busy travel schedule in the NBA, she decided to keep Amari with her in Los Angeles.

“Amari has a handful of seizures a day with the type of epilepsy that he has,” she shared. “I have chosen to take care of him and be there for him because it’s not good that he travels.”

“California weather is so good for Amari and I just love having Amari be a part of my family,” she added.

The mother of two also noted that having Amari around is “important” for her children with Tristan — daughter True, 8, and son Tatum, 3 — as well as her kids, nieces and nephews, so they can be exposed to different types of people.

“I think it teaches everyone compassion, understanding,” she explained. “It opens up their minds to seeing, ‘Wow, Amari is disabled, sure, but he’s also just like us at the same time.'”

“We just want to provide Amari with the best, most beautiful life that we know how. And he deserves that,” she added, sharing that she hired two caregivers for Amari.

Tristan Thompson Granted Legal Guardianship Over Younger Brother Amari After Their Mother’s Death

Tristan Thompson is now the legal guardian of his younger brother, Amari. The court ruling comes just over one year after the January 2023 death of their mother, Andrea.

On Monday, the Los Angeles County Superior Court granted Thompson, 32, sole guardianship of his 17-year-old brother, according to court documents obtained by PEOPLE.

Thompson filed for full guardianship on Sept. 8., claiming that their father, Trevor Thompson, has been absent from his younger brother's life since 2014. The NBA star also asserted that he is Amari's closest living family member.

According to the docs, "The Court finds that it is not in the Minor best interest to be returned to his/her parents' previous country of nationality" of Canada, where Amari was born. The court also found "reunification" between Amari and Trevor is "not viable due to neglect, abandonment under California law."

Amari has epilepsy as well as other medical conditions that require around-the-clock support, which led to Thompson's request for guardianship. Per the initial Sept. 8 filing, "Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment." 

"Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs,” Thompson said, per the docs.

He also told the court he would like to assist his brother in managing and investing the $103,475 he received from their mother’s inheritance.

Per the court's ruling, Thompson was granted the authority to “manage ward’s finances and assets, travel with the ward within the United States of America and internationally, enroll ward in social and other extracurricular activities, decide living arrangements of the ward [and] obtain legal counsel on behalf of the ward."

According to the initial filing, Amari lives with the NBA player in Hidden Hills, California. Prior to being in Hidden Hills, the brothers stayed with Khloé Kardashian after extreme weather damaged Thompson's home. 

Following the death of their mother, Andrea, on Jan. 5, Thompson flew with Kardashian, 39, to Toronto to join his family. The Hulu reality star and Thompson share a son, Tatum, 1, and a daughter True, 5.

Tristan Thompson wants to be appointed conservator of his disabled teenage brother after their father went missing.

According to recently filed court documents, the NBA star is seeking to become the sole legal guardian and conservator for his 17-year-old brother, Amari — who is confined to a wheelchair due to a severe neurological disorder.

Tristan, who has two children with reality TV star Khloe Kardashian, has served as the primary caregiver of his younger sibling since their mother, Andrea Brooks, died last year.

 He claimed in his legal filing, obtained by ET, that their father, Trevor Douglas Thompson, “abandoned” his brother and “failed to pay any child support despite the court order” issued in 2014.

“I have not had any contact with him since his separation from our late mother in 2014, and contact was minimal prior to that date,” the Cleveland Cavaliers center claimed.

“My only contact with Trevor Thompson in the past nine years was a brief interaction when he appeared at my mother’s funeral. I have no knowledge of his current or recent whereabouts.”

Tristan, 32, noted that the legal experts he hired to locate his father were unable to track him down.

Both brothers began living with Kardashian in her California home after their mother’s unexpected 2023 death of a heart attack. Tristan is seeking legal guardianship so he can better manage Amiri’s finances and healthcare with less difficulty.

NBA star Tristan Thompson was back in court as part of his effort to become the permanent guardian of his 17-year-old disabled brother Amari.  

According to court documents obtained by RadarOnline.com, this week, Thompson and his legal team presented more details in court after a Los Angeles Superior Court judge requested additional information. 

Last year, Thompson was appointed temporary guardian of his brother months after their mother Andrea died.  

Amari was diagnosed with epilepsy and other medical conditions that require around-the-clock support. Since Andrea’s passing, Tristan said he has been taking care of his brother.

Tristan has been attempting to be named permanent guardian of Amari but the court has yet to grant his petition – due to the judge asking for more information.

In his paperwork, Tristan explained “Amari is a minor and has medical conditions that render him unable to take care of himself or seek gainful employment. Appointing a guardian for Amari would be in his best interest because it would ensure that someone would be responsible for providing and fulfilling his basic needs.”

Tristan said Amari is set to inherit $114k from their mother and he wants to invest it for his brother. In addition, Tristan said as guardian he would enroll his sibling in school, ensure he had the proper healthcare, and it would allow him to travel internationally with him. 

“Tristan has been taking care of Amari since their mother died in January of 2023. Tristan has ensured that Amari has made of all his medical appointments, has had all of his basic needs met, and has provided him with a quality of life that none of Amari's other living relatives can meet,” the petition added.

In the new filing, Tristan provided more details of the relationship with his estranged father Trevor Thompson. Previously, the NBA star said he had no contact with Trevor and did not have an address for him to serve him with notice of the hearing for guardianship.
