After eight months, the state of Wisconsin has finally released its report on Dane County's actions in a child protection case that ended in six-year-old Deshaunsay Sykes-Crowder being brutally murdered. Not surprisingly, the state found something to criticize in Dane County's handling of the case.
But not as much as it should have. While the state faulted Dane County for a few infractions, it ultimately concluded (in a line that was not part of earlier drafts): "It is impossible to predict what, if anything, could have resulted in a less tragic outcome."
The truth is there were plenty of big, red warning flags. Actions could and should have been taken to avoid the clear possibility that Deshaunsay Sykes would be harmed.

Thank you for this article. It is an example that we see everyday. An authority undertakes an investigation and that gives us hope -- only to have our hope dashed away when the results come in.
Overseers often have the written word - the so called evidence - but don't talk to the people involved to get a real truth of the circumstances involved.
This is an excellent composition that is independent of politically connected agenices.
We do not need soft overshight expecially when it comes to life and death.
Individuals involved in the screw up should be removed from their positions.
There must be consequences for one's actions and inactions and this case clearly is screaming for swift action.
Their conclusion that it is impossible to predict what could have resulted in a less tragic outcome is simply a not so well worded cop out!
This was a pretense of oversight - not real oversight.
Perhaps, the reporter should have investigated why the old lady was removed from her son's home. Was the reporter only interested in the sensation of seeing an old lady screaming?
