Douglas J. Koufman is charged with exploitation of an elderly person or disabled adult for more than $100,000. The 57-year-old surrendered at the Palm Beach County Jail and posted bail.
Koufman's attorney Michael B. Cohen says: "We vigorously deny the allegations and we believe that the evidence will eventually show that Mr. Koufman will be exonerated."
According to an affidavit by the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office, Koufman misappropriated at least $873,000 from his mother's trust fund.
His mother, Charlotte Koufman, is now 88 and suffers from dementia.

Ever person who does this to the elderly need to be accountable. This should include court appointed guardians. There are many in the state of Florida exploiting the elderly, family and professional. I don't understand why the family members are the only ones held accountable... Perhaps it is because the lawyers, judges and Professional Guardians aren't getting their share of the take??
I am sorry for the victim. If he did this, it's despicable. And unfortunately, it has another effect: his mother will now likely end up in a guardianship. That will take everything she has left. The difference will be that no one will be charged with exploitation that time.
