The Indiana trial court system has several types of courts: circuit, superior, small claims and one probate court. In 2009, 1.5 million cases were filed in those courts, and all of the cases were heard by judges who are lawyers. Those judges are in good standing with disciplinary authorities and licensed to practice law in Indiana.
Indiana also has about 75 city and town courts. In 2009, 375,000 cases, including criminal misdemeanors and speeding tickets, were heard in these courts. Not all of the judges in those courts are lawyers. Some cities and towns do not require it.
SB 312 would require all judges in the state to be lawyers. Judges who are not lawyers would be allowed to complete their current term. Their replacements would have to be lawyers in good standing, admitted to practice law in Indiana.
The Indiana Judicial Conference (judges from across the state) and the Strategic Planning Committee of the Conference, strongly support SB 312. Indiana judges believe that non-lawyers serving as city and town court judges attempt to perform their duties to the best of their abilities.

I do agree that all judges should have a law degree. Not that it helps them follow the law for sure!
Gov't attorneys w/gavels have law degrees in the Family courts and they ARE nothing short of Legal Criminals. Parents are PUT in jail to extort MONEY without benefit of a Jury Trial and Denied evidence to prove innocence. They are Stealing children similarly as they do elders to fill beds and use family money to fund it; once the money runs out the taxpayer pays the bill.
In kiddy stealing, these kids are used as sex toys and party favors. Whenever there is an Unchecked Authority whether it be the Church or Gov't IS where the Pedophiles flock to.

You're right StandUp, what good is a law degree if they choose to ignore the law?
Judges 'do' have to be lawyers. Guardians do 'not' have to be lawyers. I have personally criss-crossed the guardian guidelines, revised codes and we have real problems. I am one of the only people (nationwide) who have actually had a guardian ad litem "legally removed by the court" after a court trial was held against him. [[also upheld by the appellate court]] Guardian-ad-litem fees in my case were billed over $129,000.00 (NOT a type-o). He was still granted full fees for making false allegations against me.
