Okla. couple arrested for allegedly stealing $283,000 from elderly mother with Alzheimer's

An Oklahoma couple has been arrested after they reportedly stole $283,000 from a family member with early stages of Alzheimer's and left her both "penniless and homeless," the Tulsa World reports.

Sheri Stallings, 49, and Hezekiah Stallings, 27, have been charged with elder abuse and exploitation months after Adult Protective Services discovered Sheri Stallings' mother abandoned in a nearly vacant home. The Stallings had been pretending to act as the woman's caregivers, according to the Wagoner County Sheriff’s Office.

"True evil preys on the elderly and children," said Sheriff Chris Elliott. "It’s bad enough with all the scammers in the world, but it’s unfathomable when your own children, fueled by greed and cloaked as a ‘caregiver,’ can do this to their own defenseless mother."

In February, APS found Sheri Stallings' mother in a house that had very little furniture, including no bed and almost no food, a press release notes. The agency took her into custody, investigated her situation and turned its findings over to police.

A further investigation revealed that Sheri Stallings had taken over her mother's checking account and retirement accounts, along with the profits made from the sale of her mother's home in Tulsa, police said. The couple allegedly used the money as a "personal slush fund" and bought two 10-acre properties without the mother's knowledge.

“I am appalled at the blatant evidence my investigators have uncovered in this case,” Elliot said.

Sheri and Hezekiah Stallings are both being held at Wagoner County Detention Center on $20,000 bonds.
