New information on Cullman attorney accused of attempting to murder her husband

by Brian White, Gracie Johnson

Cullman Police say local attorney Sara Baker of Cullman is facing a long list of serious charges, including conspiracy to commit murder and three counts of attempted murder. Investigators arrested Baker Monday night and say the case doesn’t stop there — she’s also charged with distribution of a controlled substance, elder abuse, and domestic violence.

Cullman Police confirmed to ABC 33/40 on Wednesday that the attempted murder charges against Baker stem from allegations that she attempted to kill her husband.

According to a sworn complaint filed in Cullman County District Court, Sara Baker is accused of conspiring with at least one other person to obtain fentanyl as part of a plot to kill her husband, James Doyle Baker, between September 1 and November 25, 2025.

The document outlines three separate attempted murder charges, alleging that Baker tried to poison her husband on September 4, September 12, and September 20 by placing fentanyl—or what she believed was fentanyl—into his food or beverages.

The complaint also includes a domestic violence charge, stating that James Baker was Sara Baker’s current spouse and that she caused him physical or mental impairment by secretly giving him the drug. Another charge lists elderly abuse, alleging that he was an elderly victim who suffered physical injury from the poisoning attempt.

Prosecutors say Baker also repeatedly tried to obtain fentanyl from another person. She faces four solicitation charges for allegedly requesting that someone sell, furnish, or deliver fentanyl to her on four separate dates: September 4, September 12, September 20, and November 25.

The final charge accuses Baker of unlawfully distributing or furnishing fentanyl at the couple’s home on September 4.

The complaint was filed by a complainant identified as Zach Latham and sworn before a magistrate on November 26, 2025.
