Lawyer accused of stealing from church trust fund

A local lawyer has been arrested on the allegations that he stole nearly $140,000 from a church trust fund in his care.

Larry D. Cantrell, 65, of Riceville, was indicted last month by the McMinn County Grand Jury and arrested Monday on charges of theft of property $60,000-$250,000 and tampering with evidence.

According to the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI), Cantrell is accused of having stolen a total of $139,325.98 from a fund designated for the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church and Cemetery that he was entrusted with overseeing. The alleged thefts reportedly took place over a seven-year period from March 2009 to September 2016.

The TBI first began investigating the issue in 2014 at the direction of then-10th Judicial District Attorney General Steve Bebb, who asked the agency to look into a suspicious matter. The investigation started on May 13, 2014, and Cantrell was indicted by the grand jury during the September 2016 session.

At some point during the course of the investigation, Cantrell allegedly falsified documents with the intent to "affect the course or outcome of the investigation."As a result, the charge of tampering with evidence was added on.

Cantrell was booked into the McMinn County Justice Center Monday and was released on $10,000 bond. His arraignment in McMinn County Criminal Court is set for Friday.

Cantrell is a longtime member of the McMinn County School Board.

An accountant stole over $1.1 million from the estates of two women who fled Germany during World War II, prosecutors said Wednesday.

Richard Doren, 50, as administrator to the estates, was supposed to find next of kin for the late clients but many died in the Holocaust, according to the Manhattan District Attorney.

Between 2009 and 2015, Doren took large sums of money from the estates for himself and used it to pay off a mortgage that was held in his wife’s name and her $10,000-per-month credit card bills.

“Insider theft and fraud can be committed by new and long-term employees alike — this defendant is accused of stealing from clients at the accounting firm where he worked for approximately 20 years,” DA Cyrus Vance Jr. said in a statement

Doren, who pleaded not guilty in Manhattan Supreme Court, was ordered held on $300,000 bail.

Former Granite City resident accused of stealing money from family member

KMOV.com GRANITE CITY, Ill. (KMOV.com) – A former resident of Granite City is facing felony charges for allegedly forging checks and stealing money from a family member.

Daniel J. Moutria, 52, of Harrisburg, Illinois allegedly financial exploited a family member by taking money from the victims’ checking and savings accounts, the Madison County Sheriff’s Office said.

On August 1, police began their investigation and identified Moutria as a suspect.

Moutria was charged with financial exploitation of an elderly person and a person with a disability and four counts of forgery, police said. He was taken into custody on October 30 and transported to the Saline County Jail, where he was pending bond or extradition proceedings. His bond was set at $80,000.
