Caregiver charged for stealing jewelry, money from 90-year-old, Shorewood police say

SHOREWOOD, Ill. (WLS) -- A caregiver is accused of stealing jewelry and money from a 90-year-old living at a assisted living facility.

On Monday, police arrived to Timbers of Shorewood at 100 North River Road.

A caller told police that Maryln C. Villalobos, 54 of Orland Park, had potentially stolen items from an elderly resident and had locked herself in the bathroom.

Police arrived before 2 p.m. and found Villalobos trying to flush jewelry down the toilet.

A 90-year-old resident said the jewelry was theirs.

She was arrested and taken to the police department for booking.

While at the station, police said the woman asked to go to the bathroom multiple times. She was allegedly trying to flush cash down the toilet.

She was charged with financial exploitation of the elderly, residential burglary, burglary, theft, and obstructing a peace officer.

Caregiver charged with stealing from older man, Denver DA searches for more victims

Denver District Attorney Beth McCann has charged Stefanie Lea Scott with theft from an at-risk person, financial exploitation of an at-risk person and caretaker neglect. The DA is asking for help from others who believe they have been a victim of theft from Scott.

According to investigators, Scott began working as an in-home caregiver for an older Denver man. On April 5, Scott assumed power of attorney for the mean and she retained power of attorney until June 20. During that time, prosecutors allege Scott stole $49,829 by writing checks to herself and transferring money from the man's bank account without his knowledge. Scott is also the "Senior Light LLC" agent, registered with the Colorado Secretary of State.   

Anyone who believes they have been a victim of financial exploitation by Scott should call Det. Dalton Montgomery at 720-913-6870.

"We must hold people accountable for preying on society's vulnerable, and that's exactly what we intend to do in this case.  We are also hoping that anyone else who Stefanie Scott may have victimized will now come forward," said McCann in a statement.

Boca Raton caregiver charged with stealing $75K from elderly woman

BOCA RATON, Fla. — A Boca Raton caregiver is behind bars Wednesday after allegedly stealing more than $75,000 from an 87-year-old woman.

Boca Raton Police said Maria Soriano worked as a live-in health aid for the victim for over a year.

According to court documents, back in March, the victim’s family fired Soriano because they believed she was stealing and fraudulently cashing checks.

After months of investigating, Boca Raton Police said they have video surveillance and bank documents linking her to the case.

“You’ve got some serious charges,” said Judge Charles Burton. “Exploitation of elderly, $50,000 dollar bond.”

The investigating officer said Soriano stole more than $78,400.

Checks dated between December 2019 and February 15, 2021, were made out to ‘cash.’

In April, police failed to locate Soriano, but she was extradited from California yesterday.

“Ten-thousand dollar extradition fees -- so how long have you been here? You just got booked in from California?” asked Burton.

“Yesterday,” Soriano responded.

Soriano is facing four charges, including money laundering, organized scheme to defraud, fraudulent use of personal identification information and exploitation of an elderly person.

She is due back in court on July 15.
