Schindler's list: Terri's brother now saving others

Bobby Schindler, the brother of Terri Schiavo and the executive director of the foundation that bears his sister’s name, is seeking to be appointed guardian for a New York man who was left with a severe brain injury after a home accident.

The announcement was made by the Terri Schiavo Life & Hope Network, which confirmed that attorney Christopher Johnson has filed with the Supreme Court for New York a petition seeking Schindler’s appointment.

At issue is the health and future for Gary Harvey, a Chemung County resident who was injured in a home accident in 2006.

The accident left Harvey with a profound brain injury, and his spouse, Sara Harvey, sought guardianship, only to be rejected by the Chemung County Supreme Court. The court eventually appointed the county department of social services.

According to the foundation, Sara Harvey has been fighting the county in court ever since. So far, however, courts have kept the county in charge of Harvey’s case, even though an ethics committee from the hospital where Harvey was staying recommended that he be deprived of food and liquid, which essentially would kill him.

While the foundation says the court rejected that request, it has continued to rule that county officials are in charge of Harvey’s life.

“I have raised the question many times, ‘How can Chemung County, guardian of Mr. Harvey, be acting in his best interest when they, in fact, tried to kill him?’ From all indications, it appears that Mr. Harvey has been warehoused and denied the opportunity to receive the care and rehabilitative services that would benefit his condition,” stated Bobby Schindler.

This is one of the top bolgs for pro-life. Be interesting to see how far this gets out.

That's a clever title, I wish I had thought of it. It's so true, too. Bobby Schindler is ready, willing and able to take over as Gary Harvey's guardian. The County doesn't want Gary. This is a perfect solution.

It will sure save the tax payers a lot of everyone makes out.

Why was the wife rejected as guardian? The courts are supposed to PREFER an available, willing, suitable family member.

Because the County wanted control and they lied!

Ask Kevin Moshier who is the appointed attorney for Mr. Harvey and what Mr. Harvey's wishes would be. Ask Mr. Moshier what facts and evidence he had to nominate the "clients we liked". His former employer...the county before he became an officer of the state.

Based on myths, speculation and beliefs right Mr. Moshier?

Looks like Mrs. O'Shea is going to act on her best behavior.

Let's hope the truth will come out during this court process - the county will be doing tap dancing double speak and distraction tactics so beware these people are pros at avoiding accountability. Gary's future is in God's Hands as this is the first ray of hope during this long ordeal. We know the county pals aren't in God's favor. It's time to stand up and be counted.

I would like to thank attorney Chris Johnson for taking this on for Bobby Schindler. It renews my faith in humanity when I see good people doing exceptional things.

Thank you Mr. Johnson and thank you Mr. Schindler.

My hat is off to Bobby Schindler with my deepest respects. And I smile every time I see new press coverage on this story.

I wonder if Chemung County now wishes they'd given up this case long ago before Bobby Schindler became involved. They had their chance but blew it. Let's hope they can see it's in their best interest to just settle it rather than take it to court.

I too smiled at the title, Stand Up. It fits. Bobby Schindler is a very special human being and he is spending his life saving others. Thank goodness he's involved in the Harvey case.

I would have to agree with most of you on how exceptional Bobby Schindler and Attorney Chris Johnson are. Right from the heart and are true hero's and what our country should stand for.

Like I was told anyone who does this for money or "gifts" is not doing it for the right reasons.

No "gifts" or money being dished out for this act of human compassion.
