SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (Dakota News Now) - A 58-year-old Brandon woman has been ordered to pay $107,000 in restitution after stealing money from an elderly adult to gamble.
According to South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley’s office, Coralee Multerer was sentenced Thursday in a Minnehaha County Circuit Court.
Multerer pled guilty to one count of Grand Theft by Exploitation after she was found to have stolen from an elderly adult between December 2020 and October 2022. She used the power of attorney to steal money from the victim’s account to gamble and for other uses that were not for the victim’s benefit.
Although the Attorney General’s Office recommended Multerer serve five years in prison with five years suspended, the judge ordered that Multerer pay $107,000 in restitution with all prison time suspended.
“This
defendant violated her position of trust to a vulnerable member of our
society,” said Attorney General Jackley. “I appreciate the work of the
Attorney General’s Office’s Elder Abuse Unit for investigating and
prosecuting the case.”
