Woman accused of stealing thousands from elderly man she was taking care of

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – Albuquerque police say a 27-year-old woman stole $5,883 from a bedridden older man she was hired to care for.

Police say Gloria Flores faces fraud charges after investigators said she used the man’s credit card for charges at GEICO, Discount Tire and Albertsons.

Sally Linhart, the victim’s daughter, said she learned about the charges after her father’s landlord checked his mail when Flores stopped working in his apartment.

“She’d been using the credit card and the statements had been coming in the mail, so she was intercepting those.” said Linhart.

Linhart said she lives eight hours away in Oklahoma and said Flores admitted through text messages that she took the money.

“I’m going to give you this opportunity. Just admit what you’ve done, pay us back, and it’ll be a lesson learned for you,” said Linhart. However, Linhart said Flores wouldn’t do it.

Linhart said the case felt familiar because someone else stole from her father about three or four years ago and later paid the money back over about 12 months.

“I want to say, three or four years ago, and same thing happened. I contacted the girl, and I said, I know what you’ve done, and she said, please do not call the police. Please do not press charges. I will pay you back. And she did, and so she paid my father back over the course of about 12 months.” said Linhart.

New Mexico Aging Services says elder abuse can take different forms and says the number of cases is not going away.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation says $55 million were lost to elder fraud scams in New Mexico in 2025.

Police: Brockway woman stole nearly $200k from elderly man

JEFFERSON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — A Brockway woman is in jail after she allegedly stole nearly $200,000 from an elderly man who was in her care, according to police.

Kelly Wright, 55, is facing felony charges after she allegedly exploited an 86-year-old man, according to a report from the Brookville Police Department. Wright transferred nearly $200,000 from the victim in April of 2023.

The transfers were as follows:

• On 4/21/23: $101,504.11 was transferred from the victim’s account to Wright’s account
• On 4/28/23: $97,939.08 was transferred from the victim’s account to Wright’s account

According to the criminal complaint, on April 26 the victim signed their power of attorney over to Wright after his physician found him to be in a “mental state of incapacitation” due to memory loss among several cognitive and physical issues. The first transfer that Wright did was before she had obtained power of attorney from the victim, according to the complaint.

Wright allegedly told a representative with the Jefferson County Area of Agenngy that after the transactions were made, she then cashed out the money and gave it to the victim. Officers reached out to Wright to set up an interview. On two separate occasions, she failed to show up to those interviews, according to police. Wright failed to show proof of having used the funds for the victim or the estate of the victim.

According to the criminal complaint, officers obtained the warrants to search Wright’s personal accounts. The accounts showed that Wright had taken the money from the victim and allegedly used it to pay off her loans.

Wright is in Jefferson County Prison after being unable to post 10% of her $200,000 bail. She is facing felony charges of financial exploitation of an older adult or care-dependent person, theft by failing to make required disposition of funds and theft by unlawful taking. 

She has a preliminary hearing scheduled for Sept. 27.

Woman arrested after authorities say she's accused of stealing from an elderly man with dementia

COLUMBIA COUNTY, GA (WFXG) - The Columbia County Sheriff's Office arrested a 22-year-old woman after she was accused of exploitation and intimidation of an elderly man.

According to a police report obtained, the executive director of the Claiborne Premier Retirement on Furys Ferry Rd, home stated she believed a current employee took an elder's credit card and used it in several stores. According to the executive director, she said she had received emails from the elderly man's son, stating he had observed suspicious activity going on with his father's bank account. 

According to the report, the son stands as his father's power of attorney since his father suffers from dementia and has access to his father's bank account. 

The report goes on to explain that the executive director said that the elderly man had not left the retirement home in several days and was unable to locate his credit card. The report states the only transactions that were made were in Columbia County at Walmart on Evans to Lock Rd, Dicks Sporting Goods, Target, and unknown locations at Super Express, Wendy's, and McDonald's. 

Authorities say they believe the suspect involved in this incident is Lateakerria Michan Laney who's currently being held at the Columbia County Detention Center.
