Woman arrested on warrants after harassing elderly mother

By Jon Johnson

GRAHAM COUNTY – Her own mother may not have wanted her around, but law enforcement did and arrested Corine Runyon, 54, on multiple warrants after an alleged domestic violence incident on Saturday.

According to a Graham County Sheriff’s Office report, deputies were dispatched to a residence off West Cactus Road at about 6:30 p.m. after an 84-year-old woman called and said her daughter refused to leave her alone.

The victim advised that her daughter, identified as Corine Runyon, wanted to use a vehicle that the victim had access to and refused to leave her alone. The victim locked herself in her bedroom following a verbal argument and said Corine was attempting to gain entry.

While en route to the residence, Graham County Dispatch advised of two active warrants for Corine’s arrest regarding probation charges — one from Graham County Superior Court for a drug paraphernalia case in 2022 and for failing to appear in Safford Municipal Court regarding an assault charge from 2022.

Upon arrival, Corine was not located in the house but was found a short distance away. She allegedly told a deputy that her mother suffered from dementia and that she was her caretaker. She denied attempting to force her way into her mother’s bedroom and said she wanted to use the car to go to the hardware store.

As Corine was being placed under arrest, she expressed concerns for her mother’s well-being and said she cannot bathe herself and frequently forgets to eat. Corine also stated that her mother has no other nearby friends or family support and does not leave the house.

A Sheriff’s Office sergeant later interviewed the victim and confirmed she had access to food and water. The sergeant reported the victim denied experiencing any issues with her independence, although he did point out that her air conditioning was malfunctioning.

Corine was transported to the Graham County Adult Detention Facility and booked on her outstanding warrants. A deputy also completed an online referral form with Adult Protective Services regarding the mother’s situation.

Investigation continues for woman arrested; Charges relate to elder abuse in care of her aunt

A Baltimore County woman is being held in jail without bond, accused of neglecting the care of a family member, according to charging documents obtained by 11 News Investigates.

The family member is a woman who was a double amputee and had been bedridden for 15 years.

Neighbors told 11 News they are upset and disturbed by what has happened. They did not want to speak on camera, but some said the family had just moved in several months ago.

A medical call brought first responders last week.

Baltimore County police arrested 34-year-old Brittany Brooks on three charges related to abuse and injury of a vulnerable adult.

Police said 56-year-old Antoinette Gray was found in deplorable condition inside a home on Kirkwood Road in Gwynn Oak, according to charging documents.

Brooks called 911 and said her aunt had been depressed and hadn't been eating or acting like herself for about a week.

First responders arrived and entered the home, where they found Gray in a bed in the dining room. They noticed a terrible odor and saw flies, maggots and bed bugs, according to the charging documents. Gray had bedsores and was suffering from an infection. Her condition was so bad that rescuers worried about her going into shock.

The court record read:

"Due to victim Gray's skin being stuck to the mattress, victim Gray was transported to the hospital with the mattress still attached to her back."

"She was unable to move victim Gray so she left victim Gray there until a doctor would approve a lift to move her instead of calling for immediate medical attention," court documents read.

Brooks also said Gray would refuse medical care when needed and would not let anyone tend to her. One officer said they heard Brooks tell her mother she might get arrested for neglect, court documents show.

Gray, who died Aug. 15, said she was under Brooks' care for around a year, according to charging documents. Gray thanked rescuers and medical staff for helping her.

The investigation is ongoing. Brooks has another court date set for Sept. 6.

Long Beach woman arrested after allegedly choking elderly uncle in front of caretaker

By Emily Holshouser

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and attempted murder after she allegedly choked her elderly uncle last month in his home, injuring him, authorities said. The man died weeks later.

The Long Beach Police Department responded to the 2600 block of Fanwood Avenue on June 8 for a report of someone being choked. Officers found a woman leaning over an elderly man with her hands around his neck. The woman, 52-year-old Long Beach resident Jennifer Dail, was taken into custody.

Firefighters treated the man, 83-year-old Long Beach resident James Brooks, at the scene, and he declined to be taken to a hospital.

Elder abuse investigators arrived at the scene and found that Dail, who was Brooks’ former caretaker, called 911 either during or after the choking. Another caretaker who was at the home gave details about Brooks to dispatchers on Dail’s phone.

The caretaker’s role in the incident is unknown at this time, but they are not being investigated as a suspect. It is not clear what led to the choking.

Several days later, Brooks complained of throat pain and his health began to decline. On June 14, he was found unresponsive in his home and was pronounced dead. His death was ruled a homicide on June 30.

Dail has been booked for attempted murder and is being held at Long Beach City Jail. Her bail was set at $1 million. Her charges, according to the Long Beach Police Department, are expected to be amended from attempted murder to murder.

With promise of 'gold fortune,' Grand Island woman defrauds $474,123 from California man, police say

by Jeff Bahr

A 65-year-old Grand Island woman was arrested Wednesday following a California-based investigation into a case of elder financial exploitation.

Constance Reimers was charged Thursday in Hall County Court with conspiracy to commit a Class 2A felony and theft by deception totaling $5,000 or more. A warrant was issued for Reimers’ arrest on Tuesday.

Reimers
Her arrest was based on an investigation that was initiated by investigators from the FBI Elder Justice Task Force in San Diego County in California.

The investigation leads “the Hall County Sheriff’s Office to believe that this case has crossed into other surrounding communities in Nebraska and across state lines,” says a news release. “While some victims have been identified as a part of this investigation, we suspect that more financial victims exist. We hope that this arrest will empower victims of elder financial exploitation to come forward.”

Investigators believe that at least two victims in the case live in Nebraska, Hall County Chief Deputy Josh Berlie said Friday.

According to the affidavit, Reimers established a relationship with an Oceanside, California, man through the Zoosk dating site, as well as Google Hangouts and email. The relationship “quickly turned romantic,” and Reimers began to ask the man “to send her money for various reasons,” the affidavit says.

Those reasons included paying rent, helping with a financial burden caused by COVID-19 and “helping to pay 40 years of storage fees so that Reimers could inherit a gold fortune that she was entitled to.”

In total, the Oceanside man allegedly sent more than $474,123 to the Grand Island woman.

The affidavit alleges that Reimers and another individual “were part of a network of scammers associated with Nana Yaw Awuah Marfo, who resides in the United States but was born in Ghana.”

At Reimers’ arraignment Thursday, Hall County Court Judge John Rademacher set bond at $50,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for 10:30 a.m. Dec. 13.

Reimers was released on bond after posting 10% of the $50,000 amount.

Modesto woman arrested for financial elder abuse, grand theft in Turlock

Catrina Moreno was booked in the Stanislaus County Jail Wednesday on charges of grand theft, obtaining money by false pretenses and financial elder abuse.

Author: Krys Shahin

TURLOCK, Calif. — Turlock police arrested a Modesto woman Wednesday for financial elder abuse and grand theft after an investigation began Sept. 2.

Catrina Moreno was booked in the Stanislaus County Jail on charges of grand theft, obtaining money by false pretenses, and financial elder abuse.

According to authorities, Moreno met the elderly victim on a website when she was looking for a maid service.

The two agreed to work beginning Aug. 24 in the victims' Turlock home. Four days after Moreno began cleaning the home, police say the victim discovered multiple jewelry items missing with an estimated value of over $14,000.

Authorities tracked the items that were allegedly sold and pawned by Moreno and found she had recently sold other high-value items that didn't belong to this victim.

The Turlock Police Department says they believe Moreno has stolen from others when operating her unlicensed cleaning business “Maid2Clean” in the Turlock area.

The Turlock Police Department asks anyone with information to call Detective Matthew Ulrich at (209) 668-6570. You can also contact the Turlock Police Department’s Tip Line at (209) 668-5550 extension 6780 or email at tpdtipline@turlock.ca.us.

Woman Arrested In Attempted Murder Of Family Member In Seal Beach

A 48-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after she reportedly tried to murder an elderly family member.

by Miranda Ceja

SEAL BEACH, CA — A 48-year-old woman was arrested Thursday after she tried to murder an elderly family member, the Seal Beach Police Department reported.

Seal Beach resident Dawn Igna was arrested after an hour-long police stand-off, authorities said. She faces charges including attempted murder, elder abuse and criminal threats.

The incident was initially reported at around 1 p.m. Thursday after police received a call of an assault with a deadly weapon that occurred in a home located in the 100 block of 5th Street.

Officers made contact with the elderly man who had made the report outside of the home. According to the victim, he was involved in an argument with an adult family member inside of the house.

During the argument, the victim told Seal Beach police officers that the woman used a knife to attempt to stab him while threatening to kill him. He was able to leave the house unharmed, authorities said.

After officers arrived, Igna reportedly barricaded herself in a bedroom of the home and refused to surrender to officers. Officers then tried to negotiate with her for an hour, though she continued to refuse to surrender, authorities said.

Ultimately, officers entered the bedroom and took Igna into custody. She was taken to a local hospital for minor injuries related to the use of pepper spray, officers said.

No other injuries were reported and no further information was available.

Woman arrested in alleged theft of $6K from disabled patient

By Mark Shenefelt

BOUNTIFUL — A 49-year-old woman has been arrested after police alleged she stole $6,000 from a disabled man at a care center where she worked.

Amber E. Miller was booked and released Sunday from the Davis County Jail in Farmington on suspicion of intentional financial exploitation of a vulnerable adult, a second-degree felony.

The patient, a quadriplegic, called Bountiful police on June 13 to report that he had asked a therapist in March to cash a check for him and bring him the cash. Despite repeated requests to hand over the money, it had not been delivered, the man said.

Miller told police, according to an arrest affidavit, that she cashed the check and delivered it to his room in an envelope along with mail items. The investigating officer said he left the case open for further follow-up.

The next day, Miller took the cash to the man, apologized, and urged him not to pursue criminal charges, the affidavit said. She was fired by the care center that day after managers learned about the theft, the report said.

The patient told police he wanted to press charges because now that Miller allegedly admitted to stealing and keeping the money, she may be a suspect in an earlier theft.

The charging documents said the earlier reported theft of $8,500 from the man’s safe in his room remains under investigation. Police said Miller denied taking that money. She said many staff members had access to the man’s safe.

No formal charges had been filed against Miller by Monday afternoon. She does not yet have an attorney of record.

Metairie woman arrested, accused of stealing money from elderly

A Metairie woman was arrested after stealing money from the elderly, according to the St. John the Baptist Parish Sheriff's Office.

The sheriff said Tammy Davis, 54, is accused of impersonating an Ochsner staff member and fraudulently taking money from elderly victims.

The investigation began in March 2022. The victims told the sheriff that a woman dressed in medical scrubs, later identified as Davis, approached them at local grocery stores and began a conversation, telling them she worked for their doctor and asking the victims if they recognized her from their doctor's office.

The sheriff said she then lied to the victims, telling them her car had broken down in the parking lot of the stores, and she needed money to pay the wrecker service standing by.

The victims gave the payment they believed was for the wrecker service.

Davis then told the victims she would contact them and pay them back when she returned to work at the doctor’s office, according to the sheriff.

A warrant was issued for Davis’ arrest.

She was booked with two counts of theft- less than $1,000, and two counts of exploitation of the infirmed, a felony.

After her arrest she was taken to the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff said Davis has a history of illegal drug charges as well as exploitation of the infirmed, bank fraud, and theft.

Woman arrested for elder abuse, coroner investigating death of father

by: Ashlyn Williams

AUGUSTA, Ga. (WJBF) – An Augusta man has died and his daughter is charged with neglect and exploitation.

Warrants reveal more information about allegations of severe abuse in case of 38-year-old Dianna Laws, charged with neglect and exploitation of her father, 62-year-old Bobby Laws, who died at Augusta University Medical Center yesterday, December 15th.

Included are allegations that the father lost more than 80 pounds in the past 5 months while in the care of his daughter and that money for food and care for the elderly man were used by his daughter to pay off personal debts.

Ten days prior to his death, Richmond County Sheriff’s Office had begun an investigation into his treatment while in the care of his daughter after concerns were raised during his emergency treatment at Augusta University Medical Center.

Sheriff’s Office Deputies responded to the Emergency Room at AUMC Sunday, December 5th, in response to call for a suspicious situation concerning an elderly male subject, 62-year-old Bobby, who’d just been admitted.  At this point, the Sheriff’s Office began an investigation into the possibility that his welfare had been endangered.

Warrants in the arrest of the deceased’s daughter, 38-year-old Dianna, allege that Laws willingly deprived her father of healthcare and necessary nourishment, jeopardizing his health and wellbeing.

One of the factors of the elder Laws’ deprivation, according to arrest warrants in the case, include a massive weight loss of 88 pounds within a five-month time period, during which his daughter, Dianna, was his live-in caretaker at a home on the 3000 block of Deans Bridge Road.

Bobby Laws’ wounds included lacerations, exposed bones, maggot-infested cuts and sores, and stage 4 pressure ulcers, according to both the warrants for the younger Laws’ arrest and a report by the Richmond County Coroner’s Report, filed after the older Laws’ death.

Coroner Mark Bowen’s report also states that Laws was admitted into the ER with electrical tape around his legs.

Further warrants for the arrest of the deceased’s daughter accuse her of profiting off checks intended for her father’s care. The 38-year-old is alleged to have been paying her own bills and debts using Bobby Laws’ social security checks during her nine years as Laws’ live-in caregiver.

Dianna Louise Laws is being held at Charles B. Webster Detention currently on charges of Exploitation of an Elderly or Disabled Person and Neglect of an Elderly or Disabled Person.

The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office tells WJBF that they are continuing to investigate and that further charges are pending autopsy results.

Ocala woman arrested after withdrawing $450,000 from victim’s checking account

By Staff Report

A 75-year-old Ocala woman was arrested after depositing $450,000 from a male victim’s checking account into her own personal account.

On Monday, December 20, a Marion County Sheriff’s Office deputy was contacted by a relative of the victim in reference to exploitation of an elderly man.

The relative told the deputy that the victim was recovering from a brain injury at Encompass Health Rehabilitation Hospital. Due to the injury, the victim’s mental capacity was altered and the relative had durable power of attorney over the victim.

The relative stated that the victim’s live-in girlfriend, Linda Eleanor Kelly, had called and stated that she no longer wished to be in a relationship with the victim and did not want to care for him anymore.

Linda Eleanor Kelly

During that conversation, Kelly told the relative that she wrote herself a check from the victim’s account in the amount of $450,000 and deposited those funds into her personal account. She stated that she transferred half of those funds into a “safe secure location” because she felt she was entitled to half of the victim’s money.

On Wednesday, December 22 at around 8:30 a.m., the deputy visited the victim at the hospital. The victim told the deputy that he recalled giving Kelly a signed blank check for her to remove money for groceries and household bills while he was in the hospital.

The victim stated that he can only write six checks a month which is why he gave Kelly one check to take enough money to cover those costs. He told the deputy that he did not give her permission to “drain” his bank account.

A copy of the check was provided to the deputy. The check was written on Saturday, November 13 in the amount of $450,000, and it was signed by the victim.

On Wednesday, December 29, the deputy interviewed Kelly over the phone. She mentioned that she had been in a relationship with the victim for 18 years.

Kelly stated that she was given the blank check and the victim gave her permission to take all of the money from the account if she needed it.

She deposited the money into her personal account and claimed that she told the victim that half of the funds were still his.

According to the MCSO report, Kelly stated that she was “paranoid” that the government would take all of the money out of his account for medical expenses which is why she moved the funds into her account.

Kelly told the deputy that the victim “deserved to give her that money” because he had been “building up a bank account with a huge amount of money in it” while they were living together. She claimed to have paid all the bills while looking after him and stated that the victim owed her the money after she took care of everything for so many years.

Kelly was arrested on Monday at around 1:30 p.m. and was transported to Marion County Jail. She was released on $10,000 bond and is facing a felony charge for exploitation of the elderly.

A court date has not been scheduled yet, according to jail records.

GBI investigates elder exploitation in South Georgia

54-year-old Jean Allison Pignocco was arrested in Olive Branch Mississippi and booked into the Colquitt county jail, after being accused of exploiting two elderly adults.(WCTV)

By Jaclyn Harold

COLQUITT COUNTY, Ga. (WCTV) - Jean Allison Pignocco, 54, was arrested in Olive Branch, Mississippi and booked into the Colquitt County Jail after allegedly exploiting two elderly adults.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, Pignocco is related to both victims, who are each 85-years-old. She’s said to have unwillingly taken them from their homes in South Georgia to Mississippi.

Investigator Jamy Steinberg says money was being transferred from their accounts to others they didn’t control.

An investigation in August led the GBI and the Colquitt County Sheriff’s Office to Pignocco. She’s being charged with two counts of exploitation and intimidation of a disabled adult, two counts of felony theft and one count of kidnapping.

Advocacy group Georgia Pines shared this kind of thing tends to happen when vulnerable people lose their trusted support system. Clinical Director, Dr. Richard Hughes said the pandemic may be making things worse as many seniors are more isolated because of the virus.

“I can think of several cases both professionally and personally where elderly people have been separated from their support groups because of becoming positive for COVID and people being concerned about that, and when there’s that void obviously anybody can step in,” said Dr. Hughes.

Both victims have been brought back to Georgia, and Dr. Hughes said you don’t have to prove that abuse is happening to report it. Instead, if you suspect something you’re advised to contact advocacy groups like Georgia Pines and allow the system to investigate the issue.

Swedish police arrest woman suspected of confining son for decades

Woman, whose adult son is being treated in hospital, held on suspicion of illegal detention and grievous bodily harm

Stockholm police have arrested a woman suspected of keeping her 41-year-old son confined to their flat for almost three decades, police and local media have said.

Emma Olsson, a public prosecutor in charge of the preliminary investigation, said the 70-year-old woman, who denies any wrongdoing, was being held on suspicion of illegal detention and causing grievous bodily harm.

Her son was being treated in hospital for physical injuries he had when he was found, Olsson said, but did not specify what they were. She said he appeared to have been kept confined to the apartment for “a very long time”.

According to the Expressen newspaper, the man was found by a relative who entered the unlocked flat, in Haninge municipality about 12 miles south of the Swedish capital, on Sunday evening after hearing that the mother had herself been admitted to hospital.

The relative said she had told authorities 20 years ago that she suspected the woman was “totally controlling her son’s life”, but no official action had been taken and other family members had urged her not to cause trouble.

“But I understood he was in there and he must be afraid,” she told the paper. “I pushed the door and shouted hello. It stank of urine, dirt and dust. It smelled rotten. No one can have cleaned for many years.”

She pushed her way through piles of rubbish to the kitchen, where she found the man sitting in a corner. “I saw him in the light from a street lamp outside,” she said. “At first, I only saw his legs … They looked terrible. Everything up to the knees was just sores.”

The relative said the man could hardly stand, was missing most of his teeth, and his speech was slurred. “He spoke very fast and a little incoherently but he was not afraid of me,” she said. “I’m in shock, but I’m thankful he got help and will survive.”

The state broadcster SVT reported that the woman had lost an earlier child at a young age and given her new son the same name, subsequently becoming “over-protective”. Aftonbladet newspaper said she took the boy out of school when he was 12 or 13.

“She stole his life from him and manipulated the people around her in order to keep her secret … he has been badly let down by all of society,” the unnamed relative told Aftonbladet.

An unidentified neighbour who lived in the same building told the paper they had not seen the man for years. “They almost never went outside, and never even opened the windows for fresh air,” she said. “The apartment was sealed.”

Another neighbour told Aftonbladet she occasionally bumped into the mother. “We talked about small things, as you do,” she said. “Sometimes I asked about the boy, and she just said he was fine. She never really talked about him.”

Many neighbours found the situation strange, she said. “But what can you do? How do you know what’s going on behind closed doors?”
