Residents at Casa Real, a leading chain of New Mexico nursing homes, went hungry because they couldn't feed themselves, fell when they tried to make it to the bathroom unassisted, and languished for hours in soiled bedding, according to the state’s complaint. In this excerpt from America Tonight, Michael Okwu investigates whether for-profit nursing home chains put profits over patients in the Land of Enchantment.

New Mexico nursing homes allegedly prioritizing profits over patients

They all do in my opinion, even the good ones. That's why the owners profit and then the nursing home says it can't afford staffing....
The same is true for Assisted Living facilities. There is a very clear difference between non-profit, mission driven Assisted Living Facilities and for-profit ALs. The fundamental values and drivers associated with all aspects of these ALs manifests in much better care, higher staffing levels, and a more caring, supportive and individualized living experience for its residents. Let's be clear. I'm not saying these non-profit ALs don't make good money because they do. What I am saying is that there is a clear difference between the way these organizations operate. All people should be very leery of for-profit ALs. It's all smoke and mirrors. Everything and I mean everything is done with the goal of increasing profits.
I know this sounds weird, but if they just were honest about it, it might be easier to swallow. They profess they're all about patient care and a good many of the workers are. But, the owners are all about profit.
