California nurse charged with 77 felonies, including alleged elder abuse

A California woman who worked as a registered nurse was charged with 77 felonies, including alleged elder abuse, theft and more.

Rosanne Marquis, 71, had been operating an unlicensed in-home health care business in Santa Barbara, according to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office.

While running the business, Marquis is accused of stealing from “elderly dependent adults, including a veteran, and failed to both supply accurate tax returns for her business, and to make required deductions and payments to the Employment Development Department on behalf of her employees for several years,” court documents said.

Although authorities have not disclosed how much money she reportedly stole, court records obtained by the Santa Barbara Independent noted that it totaled over $100,000.

Before she opened Rosanne Marquis HomeCare Service, the suspect worked as a trauma nurse coordinator at Santa Barbara Cottage Hospital. 

She also previously served on the boards of the Council of Alcohol and Drug Abuse and the Alzheimer’s Women’s Initiative, the Santa Barbara Independent reported.

Marquis was arrested in April. On June 9, she was charged with 77 felonies in connection with the crimes. She remains out of custody on bail.

The case was investigated by members of the Santa Barbara District Attorney’s Office, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Office of Inspector General, and the California Employment Development Department.

Long Beach woman arrested after allegedly choking elderly uncle in front of caretaker

A woman has been arrested on suspicion of elder abuse and attempted murder after she allegedly choked her elderly uncle last month in his home, injuring him, authorities said. The man died weeks later.

The Long Beach Police Department responded to the 2600 block of Fanwood Avenue on June 8 for a report of someone being choked. Officers found a woman leaning over an elderly man with her hands around his neck. The woman, 52-year-old Long Beach resident Jennifer Dail, was taken into custody.

Firefighters treated the man, 83-year-old Long Beach resident James Brooks, at the scene, and he declined to be taken to a hospital.

Elder abuse investigators arrived at the scene and found that Dail, who was Brooks’ former caretaker, called 911 either during or after the choking. Another caretaker who was at the home gave details about Brooks to dispatchers on Dail’s phone.

The caretaker’s role in the incident is unknown at this time, but they are not being investigated as a suspect. It is not clear what led to the choking.

Several days later, Brooks complained of throat pain and his health began to decline. On June 14, he was found unresponsive in his home and was pronounced dead. His death was ruled a homicide on June 30.

Dail has been booked for attempted murder and is being held at Long Beach City Jail. Her bail was set at $1 million. Her charges, according to the Long Beach Police Department, are expected to be amended from attempted murder to murder.

Michael Jackson’s mom, Katherine Jackson, 88, was granted a temporary restraining order against her nephew Trent Lamar Jackson last year. Hired to be her driver and live at her California compound, she claimed Trent took over her credit cards, screened her phone calls and neglected to pass on messages, while refusing to leave her alone with visitors. Nursing home employee arrested, suspected of elderly abuse

On December 28th 2018, Senior Trooper J.A. Tupper arrested Adam Wheeler on three counts of Abuse and Neglect of Incapacitated Adults causing bodily injury, one count of Abuse and Neglect of Incapacitated Adults causing serious bodily injury, and four counts of crimes against the elderly.

WELCH — An employee of Golden Harvest Nursing Home, located in Welch Community Hospital, was arrested by West Virginia State Police in connection to abuse and neglect.

Senior Trooper Jarod Tupper arrested CNA Adam Wheeler on Dec. 28 on, "Three counts of Abuse and Neglect of Incapacitated Adults causing bodily injury, one count of Abuse and Neglect of Incapacitated Adults causing serious bodily injury, and four counts of crimes against the elderly," according to Tupper.

After receiving a report on Wheeler's suspension regarding suspected physical abuse, Tupper opened an investigation.

The investigation is still ongoing at this time.

The victims range from ages 52 to 92.
