A Kansas woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder, abuse and neglect after her mother died in hospice care.

The woman is suspected of interfering with medical care for her 94-year-old mother, who died Wednesday, according to a press release issued by the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

Last week, emergency medical services responded to a call at a Spivey, Kansas, residence. The caller, a 70-year-old woman, asked for her mother, 94-year-old Betty Oeding, to be taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center for medical care. First responders saw that Oeding was malnourished and living in improper conditions, the KBI said in the release. 

Against the recommendations of the first responders, the press release said, the 70-year-old woman insisted Oeding be taken to Hutchinson Regional Medical Center instead of a nearby hospital. Oeding was admitted to the Hutchinson Regional Medical Center, entered hospice care on Monday and died on Wednesday, according to the press release. 

The Kingman County Sheriff’s Office began investigating Wednesday. They requested the assistance of the KBI the following day, and arrested the 70-year-old woman Friday morning.

The woman has not been charged. The KBI said she was arrested on suspicion of first-degree murder, mistreatment of a dependent adult/elder person, abuse and neglect and interfering with medical care.

An elderly woman from Augusta was found in a state of severe neglect last week, prompting her daughter’s arrest.

The 82-year-old was discovered incoherent and physically stuck to her mattress during a medical emergency on Dec. 30 at the home they shared on Rollingwood Drive, authorities said.

When paramedics arrived at the family’s home, they found the woman non-responsive, with her skin literally adhered to the mattress due to untreated bedsores. She was rushed to Wellstar MCG Health, where she was stabilized.

Authorities later arrested 54-year-old Tyrossale Peak, the woman’s daughter, charging her with neglect of a disabled or elderly adult. Peak remained in jail over the weekend without bond.

Investigators revealed that Peak had discontinued hospice care for her mother in June but failed to provide adequate care or maintain a safe living environment. The elderly woman had been left in worsening conditions, with her health rapidly deteriorating.

If convicted of felony neglect, Peak faces up to 20 years in prison, a fine of up to $50,000, or both.

Ozark Police Chief Charles Ward said police and paramedics found the 81-year-old victim needing severe medical treatment and took her to a hospital to treat numerous injuries that he considers critical.

OZARK, Al (WTVY) -An Ozark woman faces elderly abuse and neglect charges involving the lack of care provided to her mother, according to police.

Officers arrested 58-year-old Wendy Woodham, who had fallen Saturday at the Ozark home she shared with her mother.

Ozark Police Chief Charles Ward said police and paramedics found the 81-year-old victim needing severe medical treatment and took her to a hospital to treat numerous injuries that he considers critical.

Ward said the investigation is ongoing and won’t rule out additional charges.

Dale County Jail Records show that a judge has yet to set bond, keeping Woodham behind bars until at least Monday.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — A Memphis woman was arrested after authorities discovered her mother living in what one first responder described as “the worst case of neglect he has ever seen.”

According to police, officers responded to the 1500 block of Duke Street in Nutbush on June 16, and found an 85-year-old woman being transported to the hospital by first responders in hazmat suits.

They told officers they discovered the woman covered in bugs, urine and feces while lying on a heavily soiled mattress on the floor. 

The odor coming from the home was so bad officers could not go inside, the police report noted. The home was also described as being full of trash and in poor condition.

Once at the hospital, doctors said the patient had dementia, pneumonia, was malnourished and had pressure ulcers.

The woman’s daughter, June Harber, 57, identified herself to police as the primary caretaker. She was arrested and charged with aggravated neglect and aggravated abuse.

Today we talked on the phone to Scott Harber, whose mother is now facing charges. He says she did everything she could to take care of his grandmother.

“My mom would never harm my grandmother in any type of way like that,” Harber said.

He said she was never sleeping on a mattress on the floor. 

“My grandma is actually in a medical bed that was given to her a few years ago,” he said.

Harber says it was his mom who called paramedics when his grandmother couldn’t get out of the bed to use the restroom.

“The feces and the urine that they speak of, it was specifically on that day that she called the paramedics,” he said. “My mom, herself, has health issues in her legs. My mom can barely walk and if the judge will see that. My mom’s legs are purple, they are purple and it’s not like she can afford to go to the doctor herself.”

There were no bugs, Harber said.

“I don’t know where that comes from,” he said. “I’m not necessarily saying they’re lying but I know some things that they were saying are not true.”

He said his grandmother is doing well, and he speaks to her almost every day. A relative is now helping to take care of her.

“I don’t know what they were after or what they’re trying to do but it’s truly humiliating and disgusting,” he said. 

No bond information is available for June Harber. The family is now trying to get an attorney.

A 65-year-old Westside woman is behind bars after her 92-year-old mother died following weeks of hospitalization from apparent elder abuse, the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office announced Thursday.

Iris Vanessa Kinamon, initially charged last month with aggravated elderly abuse, was rebooked Wednesday night on a second-degree murder charge, jail records show. She was her mother's primary caregiver at their home on West Alfredo Drive off Ortega Farms Boulevard, according to her arrest report.

Officers were first called to Orange Park Medical Center early Nov. 3 to investigate a possible case of elderly abuse after the victim was brought in with a severe cut on her left leg, according to the arrest report.

Law enforcement arrested a Southern California woman after discovering her 96-year-old father living in a contaminated house infested with over 700 rats.

Catherine Ann Vandermaesen, 65, was arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and animal neglect, according to a press release from the Ventura County Sheriff's Department, People reports.

The Ventura County Adult Protective Services (APS) summoned authorities on March 13, who said Vandermaesen was initially “suspected of not properly caring for her 74-year old sister,” per the news release. However, deputies realized the problem ran deeper than previously suspected after having a conversation with the two sisters.

“Once the deputies made contact with Vandermaesen and her sister, they did not want deputies to enter the residence, and insisted all occupants at the location were fine,” the statement continues. “When the deputies requested to see their 96-year-old father, both daughters said they would bring him out in a wheelchair, but refused to allow deputies access into their residence.”

“As deputies responded to the residence, the ammonia smell associated with urine was detected 20 feet from the residence,” the statement reads. “Once the task force had assessed the overall situation, they learned that Vandermaesen had allowed her elderly father to reside in conditions not fit for human living and willfully caused or permitted the health of her elderly father to suffer under the specific living conditions noted on scene.”

Animal Control estimated that "200 to 700 wild rats were still loose and residing within the two bedrooms dwelling, walls, garage and garbage located throughout the residence."(Ventura County Sheriff's Office)

Rescuers had to remove eight dogs, a cat, a parrot, two rabbits, and 55 pet rats from the home, with Animal Control estimating “another 200 to 700 wild rats were still loose and residing within the two bedrooms dwelling, walls, garage and garbage located throughout the residence.”

Vandermaesen's elderly father and her 74-year-old sister, a "possible victim", were rushed to a nearby hospital via ambulance. While Vandermaesen has been released on bond after being arrested on suspicion of felony elder abuse and misdemeanor animal neglect, she is now set to appear in court on April 2.

That said, both the father and sister have been taken under the care of Ventura County Adult Protection Services, who helped them secure a temporary housing arrangement.

MOONACHIE - A borough woman was arrested Monday after investigators determined she misappropriated and spent $75,000 in death benefits left by her mother for two other heirs, authorities said.

Lydia Ratchinsky, 46, was named a fiduciary and executrix of her late mother's estate, which was valued at more than $400,000 in 2014, according to Bergen County Prosecutor Gurbir S. Grewal.

The estate was to be equally distributed to numerous heirs, including two who were to receive money when they turned 21, Grewal said in a statement.

The prosecutor did not name the heirs or describe their relationship to Ratchinsky's mother.

"In 2016, when one of the remaining shares of the will was to be distributed, it was determined that there were insufficient funds in the account which held the trust," Grewal said.

An audit of the trust account revealed that more than $75,000 had been removed and spent by Ratchinsky "in violation of her duties as a fiduciary," Grewal said.

Ratchinsky was arrested in Paramus and charged with misapplication of entrusted property, Grewal said.

A first appearance was set for 8:30 a.m. Feb. 22 in Central Judicial Processing Court in Hackensack, Grewal said.
