Nursing Home Resident Rip Off

A 20-year-old woman was indicted on charges that she took $4,000 from a resident of the Arlington Heights nursing home where she worked.

Wiynnona Nelson was charged at the Rolling Meadows courthouse with financial exploitation of the elderly and aggravated identification theft.

Police said a family member of the 89-year-old victim called police in April and said $4,008 had been withdrawn electronically from the woman's bank account over a period of several months. Police tracked the thefts to Nelson, who had worked at the Moorings nursing home until December.

Police arrested Nelson July 6, and she was released after she posted $4,000 bail.

Theft by nursing home employees is increasing. There seems to be more articles on the subject almost daily.

I hope all of these crimes committed by non-family members, finds it's way into the statistics of who is taking advantage of the vulnerable, elderly.

What if there wasn't a family member to review finanical records?

The perp would not be found out or charged. I hope the authorities figure it out that this is not the first time the defendant Wiynnona Nelson committed crimes.

I hope the authorities figure out there are more Nelson's out there, doing the same activities.

How many employees do this and get away with it?

Nursing homes are known to not do background checks on their employees. They hire about anybody.

Fortunately, some of the people they hire turn out good. Others are like Wiynnona Nelson.

During my Grandma's first week in nursing home (because of dementia type behavior), she reported three women came in to her room in the middle of the night and beat her up.

Her arms and hands were all bruised, especially her ring finger.

Her wedding ring was gone.

The nursing home supposedly investigated - supposedly. Nothing ever happened about it.

The nursing home should repay the $4,000.

I bet they didn't do a background check on Wiynnona Nelson.

I wonder if the family member complained to the nursing home before calling the cops -- and the nursing home dismissed the complaint?
