Unfairly Barred

Ailing and elderly, Gladys McManaman says she's miserable because a nursing home has limited the time she can visit her disabled daughter. McManaman's 61-year-old daughter, Patricia, who can neither walk nor talk, lives at Riverside Convalescent Hospital in Chico.

Gladys McManaman, 85, said the nursing home's administration will only let her visit Patricia between 9 a.m. and noon on weekdays.

There are no exceptions. She couldn't visit on Mother's Day, Easter or her daughter's birthday.

And if she stays a bit longer than the three hours she's allowed, a staff member will tell her sharply, "It's four minutes past noon — you have to go!"

McManaman's lawyer, Joe Earley, said Riverside officials claim the mother is a danger to her daughter, but they raise only vague fears.

Earley said he doesn't accept that story. He's convinced the facility's administration is retaliating against McManaman for filing complaints about the place.

McManaman said Patricia has had many falls and has often been neglected by the staff. Also, the facility has not responded quickly when her daughter has needed medical care.

McManaman said she had been Patricia's conservator. But while she was in the hospital, her conservatorship was taken away, and the Public Guardian became the conservator. That seems to have left her without any rights concerning her daughter.

If I didn't know any better I wouldn't believe I was reading a news article about a mother and daughter in the United States of America, oh this is reading like a horror story from a 3rd world, uncivilized barbaric country.

I think these people are beyond cruel and evil; they are on a power trip, retaliating and punishing the mother for her sins of speaking the truth even though the daughter is also being punished.

What is wrong with these evil dictators, these controlling people?

Addicted to power and control?

Dictating how and when a mother interacts and visits with her own daughter?

These people don't know the meaning of the word: shame it's all about doing whatever it takes to get what they want and they want Gladys McManaman to pay. Where is the outrage directerd at Riverside Convalescent Hospital in Chico?

Where the heck is the judge? Gladys McManaman must be reinstated as her daughter's guardian.

You read the papers, judge, you know what's going on here and you can fix it.

The Riverside Public Guardian must be REMOVED and every case the PG is handling must have a full review.

If the PG is cruel to Gladys McManaman, the PG is cruel to others.

I personally know of a case similar to this. The person I knew happened to be a daughter. She went to every clergy in her mid-sized town and asked them to escort her to the home. She was able to accomplish her purpose!

Imagine the press on this, if carried to the media!

Do we have a California member to help?

If you can't visit a loved one, go to all clergy for assistance, they are required reporters and respected.

The nursing home reform act, (good law: never enforced) prohibits this. It is still in effect.
