The Gary Harvey Story

“Dying With Dignity” (Emma Wright - June 3, 2009) was the title of WENY-TV’s report on the Gary & Sara Harvey story.

This was a story (not fully reported) that has the government, business, staff, lawyers, judges and the so-called ethics committee intruding upon personal family and health care matters; not only intruding, but making life and death decisions for Gary, while apparently excluding Sara Harvey to the point of telling her (to her face) that the decision of the (so-called) ethics committee would be reported to the establishment’s attorney, who would then relay it to her attorney, so if she wanted to know anything, she would have to ask him.

The degree of compassion, or rather, lack thereof, is utterly amazing and far from comforting.

The Ethic’s Committee Consult reportedly held behind closed doors on May 29, 2009 is neither the beginning nor the end of the story at hand. It is merely the latest insult in a long line of events that go back nearly three and one half years. Events that challenge and define and assures us that our lives can change in a spilt second no matter what we might have thought a moment before the devastation devours all the hopes and dreams once held dear.

Ethics committee meeting behind 'closed doors' is not ethical without consideration of family.

Thank you, Carrie Hutchens, for telling the Gary Harvey story in a comprehensive way.

There's a big difference between being controled by cold, hard institutions (like Chemung County) and being cared for by a loved one.

Would anybody pick Chemung County over their spouse? I doubt it.

I wonder how many persons on the "ethics" committee have loved ones in Chemung County Nursing Facility.

You're right, Helen. There was no advocate for Gary Harvey at the ethics committee meeting.

Sara Harvey should have been included. To shut her out was not only cruel, but truly unethical.

Behind closed doors is 100% correct. That's where all the deals are sealed. I say this is wrong, take that closed door down, now!

Where is the transcript of this so called meeting?

This sounds like socialism to me. It appears we, non-wards, are just one step away; one rubber stamp away from being 100% under government controlled agencies and their agents, all under court approval.

This scares me and it should scare you, too.

Thanks to the courage of Sara Harvey, the Gary Harvey story is getting the needed attention through NASGA, Emma Wright and Carrie Hutchens.

Please keep that bright light shining on these sneaky probate pals who need to be exposed and face the consequences for their actions.

This is an example of the righteous insensitivity that strangers have over our loved one.

They themselves would not want to have their family shut out and all decisions made by total strangers.

But, that doesn't matter. It's not about them. It's about Gary Harvey - a person they don't love nor know with any amount of intimacy. So, they rationalize that what they are doing is all right and in Gary Harvey's "best interest" when it is not.

At the end of the day, when they lay their heads down on their pillows, they know the truth and can't escape from it.

By what authority is the ethics committee acting?

Gary Harvey cannot speak for himself nor defend himself. He has only his wife to advocate for him.

And they have rendered her silent.

What they are doing is wrong.

An investigation into the operations of ethics committees is in order.

Sara has been heroic. The so called ethics committee has no place in this couple's life.

Perhaps she could contact a minister/priest or the right to life people in her community. God bless you both, Sara and Gary

I think we have a glimpse into the absolute power of "ethics" committees.

Perhaps the members have become callous over time and forgotten that they are dealing with real human beings. Perhaps they've lost all trace of humanity themselves.

The only ethical thing for the ethics committee to do is send Gary Harvey home.

It's so sad that anyone would have to beg for life.

Life should be a given.

I am sorry, Sara, for your worry and your pain.

I hope those at Chemung County come to their senses and find an ounce of empathy within themselves.

Carrie Hutchens did a good job of showing the behind the doors meeting to decide Gary Harvey's fate without even a slight consideration of his wife and what crueal treatment Sara Harvey has put up with from her husband's guardian.

This is outrageous! How can they get by with this?

Sara said...

the etchic committe consisted of a deacon who promised to speak directly to me and tell me exactly what was discussed would not even come and apologize to me to say he could not discuss the meeting with me.

The guardian said NO. This changes my thinking about churches, The deacon breached his obligations.

Who can you trust?

In my opinion, these people from The Ethic’s Committee sound like they are in bed with the players in Chemung County and will go along with their pals.

It appears they are on a power trip; they are addicted to power and control and of course money, they want more, more and more to keep their addiction fed.

Sara Harvey: Please don't give up, keep standing up for what is right and best for Gary.

TRUST? I think everyone in the USA, heck the entire world is rethinking the word Trust. In your situation, the sociopaths in control of Gary Harvey have proven they are not trustworthy. Ms. Sara Harvey, I can say 100% you can trust yourself. Please stay the course and shout out loud and keep doing what you know is best for Gary.

A deacon on the ethics committee voting for execution?

Perhaps he needs to go back and re-read the good book.
